Coaster Cart Derby

The Wayzata Chamber of Commerce Coaster Cart Derby is a family event using gravity-propelled vehicles. This event is scheduled for 10 a.m.; September 10, 2016 at the corner of Minnetonka Avenue and Indian Mound Street, located by the Wayzata Post Office. Rules and regulations are printed below. Check-in and cart safety inspection for the vehicle/driver begins at 9:00 AM. Practice runs will start at 9:30 AM. Cost for participation is $25.00 per driver. "Kit Carts" can be purchased at the following websites: www.waycoolkits.com and www.waycoolkits.com or for a home designed cart, materials may be purchased at Northern Tool & Equipment http://www.northerntool.com .

The event is intended solely as an enjoyment event for youth (6-14 years old) (boys and girls, Scouts and non-Scouts), family, and spectators. The event is not sanctioned by any recognized competition agency. The parent or guardian will directly supervise the design and construction of the vehicle, and guide and train any driver of the vehicle to ensure safe equipment and use of it. The drivers must wear a helmet, which will adequately protect them.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

Check-in and Safety Inspection at 9:00 AM at the corner of Minnetonka and Indian Mound located by the Wayzata Post Office.

Practice runs start 9:30AM

Race starts at 10:00AM

Awards ceremony to follow the race.

  • Participation is open to all youth, 6 through 14 years old, regardless of residency.
  • Acceptance of electronic waiver is required from all entrants.
  • Drivers must have participated in the construction of the car.
  • All drivers must wear protective headgear.
  • Each driver will be allowed at least one practice run.
  • Each driver is guaranteed a minimum of 2 competitive runs.
  • A “Safety Board” comprised of at least two adult volunteers will be established to determine if entries meet the requirement and intent of the “Wayzata Chamber of Commerce, Coaster Cart Derby” guidelines. All decisions made by the “Safety Board” are final.
  • The “Safety Board” officials will determine starting positions and lanes on a random basis.
  • Drivers must demonstrate to the satisfaction of the “Safety Board” that the braking and steering systems are functional, the cart is structurally sound, and the driver can operate the cart.
  • Absolutely no drive mechanisms. Gravity propulsion only.
  • Any and all ballast (weight) must be permanently secured to the car.
  • No go-cart chassis, bed frame, wheelchairs, bicycles or skateboards. “Kit cars” are acceptable but must follow Wayzata Chamber of Commerce Coaster Cart Derby specs. The “Safety Board” will rule on any questionable entries.
  • Every car must have driver’s assigned number clearly written on the car.
  • Cars must not exceed 84 inches in length. The length of the wheelbase must be a minimum of 65 inches. The maximum width of the wheelbase must not exceed 36 inches, and the minimum width of the wheelbase must not fall below 24 inches. The width of the car must not exceed 36 inches. The weight of the car and driver together must not exceed 250 lbs. The car body must surround the driver, no open cars (without car bodies) will be allowed.
  • All cars must have four wheels with a maximum wheel diameter of 12 inches. All four wheels must touch the ground at all times.
  • A maximum of two (2) separate drivers may use the same car to race.
  • Unsportsmanlike behavior will not be tolerated. Good Sportsmanship is required by both participants and spectators.

Awards will be given to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. All drivers will receive a participation patch.

The intent of the Wayzata Chamber of Commerce, Coaster Cart Derby is to encourage child and adult interaction and to have fun at the same time. Personal safety of all drivers and spectators is of the utmost importance.

NOTICE: Requested Numbers will be honored on a first come / first serve basis and will not be assigned the first week in September.
